Nakashima complex, a National Historic Landmark and included on the World Monument Fund Watch List, features architecturally significant and innovative structures built by George Nakashima, a leader in 20th century American design and the American studio craft movement. There are 14 buildings on the property. They combine the International style and Modernist influences with Japanese carpentry traditions.

Legacy Tour with Mira Nakashima

An intimate tour with Mira Nakashima, daughter and successor of George Nakashima. Hear first-hand from Mira the story of her own career and life, what it was like to work with George, and how she is continuing the Nakashima legacy today.

Tours are two hours in length. Stops included are the Showroom, Finishing Room, Chair Shop, Conoid Studio, Arts Building and Cloisters, Pool House, Pole Barn, Lumber Shed, Reception House, and Family House.

$150 per person. Offered select Saturday mornings.  

Guided Tours

Our in-depth tour of the New Hope campus and a full exploration of George Nakashima’s life and craft. Learn about George Nakashima’s full career in architecture and woodworking, his family history, and how we continue his legacy today.

Tours are two hours and are led by Nakashima family and staff. Stops included are the Showroom, Finishing Room, Chair Shop, Conoid Studio, Arts Building and Cloisters, Pool House, Pole Barn, Lumber Shed, Reception House, and Family House.

$75 per person. Offered Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings. 

Self-Guided Tours

Gain an introduction to George Nakashima’s work and explore the New Hope campus at your own pace.

This one-hour time slot includes admission into three of George’s experimental buildings: The Showroom, the Conoid Studio, and the Arts Building. Docents are stationed in each building to provide context and answer questions.

 

$25 per person, $15 for students. Offered select Saturday afternoons. 

Focus Tour: Art and Artists

Our Lead Archivist, David Long, will offer a 1.5 hour-guided tour exploring Art and Sculpture on our campus and Nakashima’s connection to Artists such as Ben Shahn, Harry Bertoia, Isamu Noguchi, Toshiko Takaezu, and others.

This tour will make stops at the Reception House, Family House, Conoid Studio, and Arts Building.

Focus Tour: Architecture

Join William Whitaker, Director and Chief Curator of the Architectural Archives at the University of Pennsylvania, on a deep-dive look at George Nakashima’s architectural work at the New Hope campus.

This tour will explore George Nakashima’s experimental houses with stops at the Family House, the Showroom, the Conoid Studio, and the Reception.

 

$75 per person. Offered select Saturday afternoons. 

Focus Tour: Landscape Architecture

Join Nicholas Pevzner, Assistant Professor for the Department of Landscape Architecture at the University of Pennsylvania, for a journey exploring how George Nakashima slowly transformed the wild New Hope property into an extended Japanese-style landscape that is contemplative and beautiful, yet functional.

Appreciating nature as George did, particularly at his home and workshop, will lead to better understanding of his furniture and architectural work.
