In college he studied flute with which he has maintained a dedicated practice ever since. While in Santa Fe, New Mexico he was introduced to the Native American flute by Indigenous musician Walking Star who became his teacher. $50 per person

Forest Therapy, also known as “Shinrin-Yoku,” refers to the practice of spending time in forested areas for the purpose of enhancing health, happiness, and a sense of awe. The Japanese words translate into English as “Forest Bathing” and refer to bathing in the beneficial compounds which trees emit, such as oxygen and phytoncides. Join certified Nature and Forest Therapy guide Anisa George for a guided forest bathing session, followed by a foraged tea ceremony at the end.

Anisa George is a writer, performer, food forest designer, and certified member of the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy Guides. Her work focuses on tuning attention to the more-than-human-world. She has been leading walks in the Philadelphia region since 2019 and currently is the resident forest therapy guide at Morris Arboretum, Mt. Cuba, and Winterthur.

Tools for Peace was initiated in 2024 to be of service to the community. The Nakashima Board of Advisors felt a need to respond to turbulent times on a grassroots level to help folks find a grounding sense of peace, power, and rest amidst the beauty and nature of the Nakashima campus.

Miriam Belov, a member of the Foundation Advisory Board, hosted two workshops, You Being Peace, in 2024. Belov is a #1 best-selling author, certified Reiki Master Teacher, a healing intuitive, and has a private practice at www.wellnessagenda.com. A pioneering expert with a dual Masters from Brown University, Miriam has taught notably at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the United Nations, Auroville, and the US Department of Labor.

Belov’s first workshop focused on “tools” to experience inner peace. Belov taught intentional meditation, body awareness and mindfulness, plus the importance of gratitude, affirmation and “glimmers.” Belov’s workshop in the Fall focused on Reiki, an ancient and revered healing process from Japan. Guests also learned how to consult the chakra system to access their own inner peace.

A concurrent series was led by Barbara Simmons in Compassionate Listening in April and June, helping participants with a deeper type of listening than normally used. After a brief description of these tools, small break-out listening groups gathered outside, taking in the trees, the ponds, and the birds to center them.

Barbara Simmons is on our Foundation Board of Directors and served as Executive Director for 30 years at The Peace Center, a peace and justice organization. Simmons was a founding producer of PeaceTalks radio. She currently serves as Ambassador to L.O.V.E. is the Answer, is on the Board of the Alpha Community Education Foundation, and serves on the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion committee of Bucks County Women’s Advocacy Coalition. Simmons is an adjunct instructor at Arcadia University’s International Peace and Conflict Resolution master’s program.
