“Compassionate Listening”

Sunday, April 25 and June 2, 2024

by Barbara Simmons

Compassionate Listening is a peacemaking tool for dialogue on difficult issues such as the violence in Israel-Gaza, Ukraine, Africa, and in U.S. Compassionate Listening is a type of deep listening to allow us to reflect on our emotional response to the trauma of violence, our role in holding space for our children or grandchildren who are anxious, concerned and angry about the violence and division the surrounds us all. In this mini-workshop, participants will be introduced to the structure of Compassionate Listening, practice it in small groups, and learn together how this important tool can be used in our daily interactions with colleagues, family and friends with whom we disagree.

Barbara Simmons served as executive director for 30 years at The Peace Center in Langhorne, PA, a peace and justice organization. Simmons was founding producer of PeaceTalks radio, creating audio documentaries focused on peace-building from Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Rwanda, South Africa, Vietnam, Northern Ireland, Canada and the United States, which aired on NPR, PRI and many other stations. She currently serves as Ambassador to L.O.V.E. is the Answer, which brings together police and the community they serve in an effort to address racism and police brutality; she serves on the Board of the Nakashima Foundation for Peace and Alpha Community Education Foundation; and serves on the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion committee of Bucks County Women’s Advocacy Coalition. Simmons is an adjunct instructor at Arcadia University’s International Peace and Conflict Resolution master’s program.
