PRESERVING THE NAKASHIMA FAMILY HOUSE LECTURE

Join us at the Moderne Gallery for a conversation about the collaborative efforts to study and preserve the Nakashima Family Home.

Mira Nakashima will share memories of growing up in New Hope and the ongoing work of the Nakashima Foundation for Peace in preserving and interpreting the Nakashima Family Home. Joining her is John Hinchman, a Senior Research Associate at the University of Pennsylvania’s Center for Architectural Conservation, who will detail recent innovative research of the House’s construction.

Tickets for the lecture are by donation, with all proceeds going towards the ongoing campaign to support preservation efforts of the Family House.

Lecture

6pm – 7pm

Opening Reception

7pm – 9pm

The lecture coincides with an opening reception for George Nakashima: Foundations of Form: An exploration of George Nakashima’s early work at the Moderne Gallery.

The exhibition presents an exploration of George Nakashima’s early designs which display a truly unique vision and an inspired progression of innovation and spirit. The early works featured serve as a testament to Nakashima’s distinct, intuitive, and naturalistic design language which captures a harmony between the natural world and the vivacity of the modern experience.

Widely recognized as one of the most important woodworkers and designers of the 20th century, Nakashima is best known for the work he produced from the 1960s onward. However, it is within his foundational work that we see the emergence of a distinct, deeply personal visual and philosophical vocabulary – one that would ultimately shape the course of his career and legacy.
